paying the rent forward.
one small thing to do today.
When we were forced out of our apartment last year, we landed in a very different neighborhood, in a much different kind of building, and in an apartment where we can mercifully afford to pay the rent. In fact, by some miracle, our current rent is less than it was previously. For the first time in a very long time, we have a small savings account with actual money in it. So today, when my social media feeds and inboxes are filled with different actions to take, advice to heed, and folks to help, I’ve decided to focus on one effort and pay it forward. I hope some of you might be able to join me.
Here’s what’s happening:
In a state besieged by violent federal agents, thousands of Minnesotans are facing the prospect of eviction. When people can’t safely leave their homes to go to work, they can’t earn an income and when their rent comes due next week, they might not be able to pay it.
There’s a systemic solution to this problem:
Robin Wonsley, councilperson for Minneapolis Ward 2, proposed a resolution for a state-wide moratorium on rent. The Minneapolis City Council has already unanimously passed it, but it will take Governor Walz to enact it.
Until that happens—and even if it does—people need immediate help.
Here’s what we’re doing:
Last night, at the urging of Garrett Bucks, I gave $50 to the Church of the Incarnation of Minneapolis Emergency Rent Assistance Fund. Today, in Garrett’s footsteps, I’ve decided to increase my donation. Like Garrett, I’m going to match the first $500 in donations from anyone reading who is able to give.
If that’s you, make a donation of any amount and send a note to me [erin at readingmytealeaves dot com] with a snap of your receipt. (If you have another rent effort you’d like to support, you can send me the receipt for that, too). Once those receipts hit $500, I’ll send $500 of my own to the Emergency Rent Assistance Fund.
PS. If you live in Minnesota, you can reach out to Governor Walz directly. Give him a ring at 651-201-3400 and tell him to enact an eviction moratorium now.

As a Minneapolis resident - thank you so much for doing this ❤️
