So sorry to ask an IT-ish question here-- I just tried to subscribe annually, had to cancel my monthly subscription (which was paused for a few months anyway), and ultimately it was $50. Is that the 20% off rate? If not, I'd love to take advantage of that rate if it's possible.

Either way excited to be annual! I've been meaning to do this for a while!

Hi there! Sorry this happened. I actually had a v lengthy back and forth with Substack and subscribers about this very thing last week. Substack ultimately signed me up for a beta program which should mean that even existing monthly subscribers should have been able to sign up at the 20% off yearly rate (That rate should be $40/yr, not $50.) It's possible that if you tried to upgrade manually rather than following the discount links, that the discount wasn't applied? It's hard for me to know without you recreating all of the steps. If you'd like to DM me letting me know what email you use to subscribe, I can attempt to figure things out on the backend!

Hi Erin, exciting news and good luck with the new book! I would love to upgrade to an annual subscription as I’m currently on monthly but when I try to change it doesn’t give the discount, do you know how I can do that or is it just for new subscribers? I could maybe cancel my subscription early and take out a new one? Thanks for all your thought-provoking and beautifully crafted words as always.

Hi Karen! This is what I asked the Substack help bot: "If i offer a discount on annual subscriptions can monthly subscribers upgrade and receive the discount?"

This was the reply: "Yes—if a monthly subscriber switches to an annual plan using your special-offer link, they’ll see the discounted annual price and can subscribe at that rate."

Let me know if you have any luck by using the link directly!

hmm. going to look into this! could be that you’d have to unsubscribe and resubscribe, which is silly!

Karen Homer's avatar

I think maybe you do, but I can’t unsubscribe till my current billing month ends although I think I can end it early 🤷‍♀️ But as you say that’s a bit silly!

Erin Boyle's avatar

sorry if my reply got lost above! supposedly it should work if you follow the link!

Well, I clicked through the link and it offered me £38 for an annual subscription (I’m in the uk) vs £4 per month but I’m pretty sure that’s always what the annual subscription is as I’ve meant to change to annual for a while and checked the cost before. Also it doesn’t have a crossing out showing the discount which I seem to remember from when at one point I had a 20% monthly discount. But maybe that’s the right amount? Seems pretty reasonable, so if it’s right count me in!

oh jeez, this should not be so complicated! i'll see if i can figure it out in a bit! thanks so much for trying!

That quote is a banger, I can see why you felt the need to write it on a vintage typewriter and put it up. However now I've worked myself up close to tears thinking about how there's still a vintage typewriter repair shop in Manhattan but it's probably run by one old man who doesn't have a protege and is just in it for the love of the game and because of rent-control, but his arthritis can't take it anymore and he might have to close the shop soon, signaling the permanent end of an era.... Please tell me if my read of this situation is incorrect bc now I'm all worked up.

Can't wait to hear more about the new book! You have very worthwhile things to say.

oh man! family owned and operated since 1932! not sure about who will take it over when the time comes, but there’s a healthy little staff! https://gramercytypewriter.com/

Wow makes sense ‘cause I think a percentage of writers still prefer using a typewriter…..? And maybe some secretaries who are now married to their typewriters. Sorry, I’m talking nonsense- heatstroke in Atlanta.

This is amazing! My brother (who owns a couple vintage typewriters) went to get one of his typewriters (and old Underwood-got it from an elderly relative when he was a kid) fixed there last time he drove to NYC a few years ago. One of a few left. He loved it and it did get fixed.

Diana's avatar

"Staying true to his trade, Paul is still fixing and servicing the very same makes and models of typewriters he started working on nearly six decades ago." Erin, I'm worried.

So excited for you, consider your new book already ordered by me!
