The year we moved to this beach town, I turned six and my big sister Cait turned nine, and I learned to ride a bike sharing her perch on a banana-seat bicycle. She sat in back and steered while I pedaled and got my bearings up front. Once I was steady enough to steer myself, we'd ride separate bikes together along the beach road a mile and a half to school. We learned to train our bicycle tires away from the sandy edges so we wouldn't wipe out on the shoulder, and to tuck our pant legs into our socks to keep them from getting caught in the gears.
