Earlier this week I sewed up a hole in my recycling basket with a length of linen tape.
Before bringing them curbside, we keep recyclables in a large French market basket that I received years ago filled with influencer swag. The basket came to me with a logo stitched on the side, which I promptly removed and since then we’ve used it for everything from shoe storage to beach gear hauling. For the past few years it’s been our dedicated recycling receptacle. We don’t always ever painstakingly dry our rinsed empties before tossing them in, and so the bottom of the basket has some signs of water damage and wear—namely a considerable tear in the weave along the bottom edge. One of the long leather handles snapped a few months ago and the other was about to. After emptying a particularly full load recently, James suggested wearily that it might be time to get a new basket with a functioning bottom and intact handles and I responded cheerfully, absolutely not.
